McLean’s Mansion – The Environment Court & Etc In The Media

McLean's Mansion saved from demolition The Press Online

"Christchurch heritage homestead McLean's Mansion has been saved from the wrecking ball.

The Environment Court upheld a Heritage New Zealand decision to decline an application to demolish the mansion first made by owners, the Murray family of Christchurch, in 2013.

The court concluded the building "has very high historical and cultural heritage value that justifies protection" and that it "contributes towards Cantabrians' sense of place and identity".

The Murray family appealed to the Environment Court after Heritage New Zealand refused them permission to use a Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (Cera) demolition order."

Heritage New Zealand has listed Philson House in Stanley Point Road as a Category 2 historic place on the New Zealand Heritage List - Rarangi Korero. The house has been described as a prime example of a corner bay villa design ‘of ornate turreted style’.

“Philson House is a great example of the bay villa at its most elaborate and ornamental, and other aspects of its history that make it valuable,” says Heritage New Zealand’s Heritage Adviser Registration, Martin Jones.

“Layers of history at Paetae Reserve” Heritage New Zealand Media Release (27.06.2016)

"One of these is the Paetae Reserve which is close to Edmonds Ruins – the historic site cared for by Heritage New Zealand – and located about 10 minutes’ drive from Kerikeri."

“We were fortunate enough to have local resident and researcher, Cath Fergusson, draw our attention to the reserve which is accessible only from the water. Like many other reserves in Northland, Paetae is a kind of time capsule that has remained largely unchanged over the decades mainly because of its relative isolation,” says Heritage New Zealand’s Northland Manager, Bill Edwards."

"In a history likely dating back centuries, Paetae became a place of settlement well before Pakeha arrived in the Bay of Islands."

"Research into the prehistoric and early historic settlement by Maori of the Poor Knights Islands has earned a Northland archaeologist a PhD from Otago University.

Dr James Robinson – Heritage New Zealand’s Northland Regional Archaeologist – recently attended his graduation in Dunedin marking the end of a 12-year academic commitment."

“My thesis was a multi-disciplinary study of Maori settlement of Tawhiti Rahi, the larger of the Poor Knights Islands off Northland’s east coast and was mandated by the Ngatiwai Trust Board and kaumatua Pona Matenga,” he says.

“The data-rich research took a holistic approach encompassing both environmental science and archaeology as well as historic and traditional sources so as to determine the timing and nature of Maori settlement on Tawhiti Rahi.

"It also reflects a long-standing relationship with Ngatiwai who have supported the research and provided James with historical information, cultural guidance and backing throughout the life of his PhD commitment.

“The research that underpinned my thesis could not have been achieved without the help and support of a lot of people, but in particular I would like to acknowledge tohunga Te Warihi Hetaraka and Rangatira Hori Parata, for their assistance both in the field and with tikanga,” he says.

Anama Woolshed

Anama Woolshed has been added onto over its long lifetime

By Julie Luxton

Let us journey back to 161 years ago and paint a picture in our mind of two pioneering men, squatters from Australia, living in a large woolshed at what is now called Anama.

The woolshed was without doors or windows, no chimney, built from nearby Manuka and thatched on top and sides with cabbage tree leaves. The fire was made in the middle of the floor and at night a blanket was hung up to serve as a door. The year is 1855 and well known pioneer John Barton Acland of Peel Forest sheltered for the night in this very woolshed.

Acland wrote in his diary “Russell and Rogers, with Seward and an Irish shepherd are living, and have been living for twelve months in a large woolshed………   It is a wonder why some people will make themselves so needlessly uncomfortable.” (more…)

Situated just on the outskirts of Ashburton, owners Peter (Mac on the local radio station) and Larraine aeroview entranceMcQuarters have spent their lives gathering fascinating jewels from a by-gone age all lovingly displayed for us to view. Their obsession with all things vintage extends to the colourful collection of antique Edison Phonographs, 78 rpm Gramo-phones, valve radios, vintage Black and White TV’s and classic broadcasting equip-ment. There’s even old radio broadcast consoles, studio microphones from the 40’s, and an example of the first type of NZBC Studio Television cameras used in the pio-neering days of television in New Zealand, the ubiquitous Marconi Mk IV.
