Today the historic home sits untouched on the corner of Fitzgerald Ave and Avonside Drive in Christchurch.

It has a gaping hole on its roof, decimated chimneys, overgrown gardens and a shipping container plonked in the front yard. ..."

A timely history lecture provided inspiration for a dynamic art exhibition currently taking place at the Hangar Gallery in Kamo, Whangarei.

Northland artist Dianne Trewin attended a talk by Heritage New Zealand’s Northland Manager, Bill Edwards earlier this year, looking at the various flags that have served as New Zealand national ensigns over the years, and the different stories behind each flag.

“This lecture for me was the kick start for the exhibition,” says Dianne.

Entitled The Constant, the exhibition is Dianne’s personal response to the flag referendum of 2015, and encapsulates some of the passion displayed from all sides of the discussion. The name derives from Dianne’s conclusion that the one constant throughout the different debates about symbolism and design was the land, sea and sky. (more…)

Public rally behind Pompallier Mission restoration work

Restoration work on Pompallier Mission’s timber and plaster has been given the green light following a hugely successful donations campaign.

“Thanks to the hundreds of people who have sent in donations, I can now book in the contractors and get the work scheduled,” says Property Manager Scott Elliffe.

“This is a great outcome for heritage, culture and tourism in the Bay of Islands and especially for Pompallier Mission. This work will ensure it continues to be an attraction for locals and visitors, making their experiences here that much better while giving the local economy a boost.

“As comments on Trip Advisor and the general feedback we get from visitors show, we offer one of the best heritage tours in the country.”

The appeal for the Heritage New Zealand cared for property has raised over $60,000 to date, with restoration work expected to start following the busy summer period next year. (more…)

The stone cottage, circa 1862, is now nearing restoration completion. DOC, who manage the site, secured monies for this, the shortfall made up by an enthusiastic committee, who have put in many hundreds of hours of voluntary work and fundraising. The single-men’s quarters also dates from the late 1800’s and DoC has made the lounge into an information room about the Hakatere Conservation Park. Any queries please phone
