Public rally behind Pompallier Mission restoration work

Restoration work on Pompallier Mission’s timber and plaster has been given the green light following a hugely successful donations campaign.

“Thanks to the hundreds of people who have sent in donations, I can now book in the contractors and get the work scheduled,” says Property Manager Scott Elliffe.

“This is a great outcome for heritage, culture and tourism in the Bay of Islands and especially for Pompallier Mission. This work will ensure it continues to be an attraction for locals and visitors, making their experiences here that much better while giving the local economy a boost.

“As comments on Trip Advisor and the general feedback we get from visitors show, we offer one of the best heritage tours in the country.”

The appeal for the Heritage New Zealand cared for property has raised over $60,000 to date, with restoration work expected to start following the busy summer period next year. (more…)

Heritage Northland Inc AGM

Heritage Northland Inc will hold its Annual General Meeting in Whangarei on September 24.

As part of the AGM, guest speaker Wong Leu Sheung will present a talk entitled The Ventnor – Understanding its History and Clarifying your Questions.

The SS Ventnor sunk about eight nautical miles off Omapere in the Hokianga Harbour in 1902 after striking a submerged rock off Cape Egmont, claiming 13 lives. The ship was carrying 499 coffins containing the remains of Chinese who had died in New Zealand for reburial in their homeland.

The wreck of the SS Ventnor was gazetted as an archaeological site in 2014 by Heritage New Zealand, and recorded in the New Zealand Archaeological Association Site Recording Scheme. Wong Leu Sheung played an active role in advocating for gazettal of the wreck as an archaeological site.

The Heritage Northland Inc AGM takes place at the Northland Vintage Car Club Rooms in the grounds of the Kiwi North Museum Heritage Park at Maunu, Whangarei at 1.30pm on September 24. All welcome.

"Owners of a Bay of Islands tourism icon will soon undertake work that will see existing facilities upgraded, and its heritage character celebrated."

“We met with Heritage New Zealand staff in the Northland office and talked about our plans. They were very positive about the design idea for the sea-facing side of the building, but also drew our attention to the rather hum-drum look of the building at the rear, which actually faces onto Russell’s main street,” says Anton (Haagh).

Alberton, the historic mansion in Mt Albert cared for by Heritage New Zealand, will feature in upcoming Auckland Heritage Festival events.

Both events will feature fresh, home-made jam – in differing measures.

“This year we are delighted to welcome gardening guru, columnist and presenter Lynda Hallinan who will present a talk entitled A Jam Session With Lynda Hallinan (Sept 25, 2pm). Here, Lynda will share her experiences making over 500 jars of jam and jelly in 52 weeks using everything from spring strawberries to Autumn quince,” says the Manager of Alberton, Rendell McIntosh.

Devonshire Teas at Alberton:
Sept 24 (10.30am-3pm); Oct 1 (10.30am-3pm); Oct 2 (10.30am-3pm)

“Historic Places Aotearoa urges halt to imminent demolition of Aniwaniwa Visitor Centre” Historic Places Aotearoa Media Release (23.08.2016)

hpa-logo-purpleHistoric Places Aotearoa says Department of Conservation Deputy Director-General Mervyn English must immediately reconsider the planned demolition of the Aniwaniwa Visitor Centre.

“The visitor centre is a significant part of New Zealand’s modern architectural legacy, listed by Heritage New Zealand as a Category One Historic Place, and a place of outstanding cultural value to New Zealand,” Mr Blackburne, who also chairs Historic Places Tairawhiti Inc, said this morning.

“Institute of Architects urges Department of Conservation to save the Aniwaniwa Visitor Centre” NZIA Media Release (22.08.2016)

"The New Zealand Institute of Architects is dismayed by the decision of Department of Conservation Deputy Director-General Mervyn English to demolish the Aniwaniwa Visitor Centre, and urges the Department to reconsider this decision urgently.

“John Scott’s architecture was original, and his importance to New Zealand architecture is increasingly recognised,” said Institute of Architects President Christina van Bohemen. “The Institute awarded John its first Gold Medal for career achievement in 1999 and just last year named its award for public architecture in his honour.”

Ms van Bohemen said the 1976 Aniwaniwa Visitor Centre is one of John Scott’s most significant works. Scott also designed Wellington’s acclaimed Futuna Chapel, which was itself threatened with demolition before its reprieve and subsequent restoration.

“The Department of Conservation proclaims on its website its commitment to New Zealand’s unique legacy and enjoins us to pass it on. So why is Mr English determined to demolish a building that Heritage New Zealand has found to be of outstanding significance?”

“Heritage EQUIP a positive step in retention” Heritage New Zealand Media Release (15.08.2016)

Heritage_New Zealand_logo"Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage, Hon Maggie Barry, announced the $12 million contestable, discretionary fund scheme Heritage EQUIP (Heritage Earthquake Upgrade Incentive Programme) in Feilding today.

The scheme will assist owners required to meet the set timeframes to strengthen their buildings under the Building (Earthquake-prone Buildings) Amendment Act 2016. It is available to owners of all privately-owned Category 1 historic places, and those listed as Category 2 (in medium and high risk areas only) on the New Zealand Heritage List/Rarangi Korero ..."

Heritage New Zealand Chief Executive appointed

Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Board Chair Wyatt Creech and Maori Heritage Council Chair John Clarke welcome the appointment of Andrew Coleman as Chief Executive.

Mr Coleman is currently the Chief Operations Officer for the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI). He has also held positions of acting Chief Executive and Deputy Chief Executive for Operations with the Ministry of Fisheries before the merger with MPI in 2012. Before this he spent 10 years in the New Zealand Customs Service and 20 years with the New Zealand Police in roles including Detective Sergeant and Inspector. (more…)

“Heritage value recognised in McLean’s Mansion decision” Heritage New Zealand Media Release (06.07.2016)

Heritage_New Zealand_logo"Heritage New Zealand is pleased with the Environment Court’s decision that confirms Heritage New Zealand’s decision to decline an archaeological authority for the demolition of McLean’s Mansion in central Christchurch because of its outstanding heritage values."

"The Environment Court decision concluded that refusing the appeal “does not prevent or restrict the existing or reasonable future use of the site” and that the owners do not lack alternatives which could substantially reduce the cost of undertaking a restoration."
