‘Twas the Night Before Christmas takes off at Alberton

A favourite Christmas tradition will continue at Alberton again this year.

The historic mansion in Mt Albert, which is cared for by Heritage New Zealand, will host a series of concerts entitled ’Twas The Night Before Christmas, presented by seasoned performers Cathie Harrop and George Henare.

The programme will consist of Christmas songs and stories, and will also showcase the talents of Paul Harrop (piano), Amanda Kirk (soprano) and musicians Dave and Jennie Khan.

Central to the show will be a rendition of the classic Christmas favourite, A Visit from St Nicholas, more commonly known as Twas The Night Before Christmas.

“Not many people know that this favourite piece of yuletide poetry was first published anonymously in 1823 and is almost 200 years old,” says the Manager of Alberton, Rendell McIntosh.

“American writer Clement Clarke Moore claimed authorship of what became a universally loved piece of literature when he included it in a book of poems that he had written in 1844. Moore was a university professor, and it appears that he may not have wanted at first to be connected with such unacademic work – though it seems his children insisted he include it in his anthology.”

Ironically, Moore’s Christmas verse became a favourite throughout the United States and the English-speaking world – leaving his more serious attempts at poetry in the shadows.

“The Christmas shows that Cathie and George have put on in the past have been absolutely wonderful, and this year will be no exception,” says Rendell.

“People can explore Alberton before the performances, and enjoy a delightful supper with the performers afterwards.

“The shows are a regular fixture in many people’s Christmas calendars, and are almost always sold out – so people need to book their seats as early as possible.”
