"Aucklanders will have the opportunity to swing back to the 1930s when fashion was hot and jazz was cool at Auckland’s Own Art Deco Day Out at Highwic on March 13."

"Live music performed by the six-piece New Orleans Joymakers Jazz Band, along with a sparkling array of classic cars from the days of flappers and swingers, will make Highwic a hot spot for people wanting to let their hair down in true Jazz Era style."

“To use slang from that era, Auckland’s Own Art Deco Day Out is quite simply the bee’s knees; the cat’s miaow and the caterpillar’s kimono,” says the Manager of the Heritage New Zealand property in Newmarket, Cheryl Laurie.

Swing back to the 1930s at Highwic’s Art Deco Day

Aucklanders will have the opportunity to swing back to the 1930s when fashion was hot and jazz was cool at Auckland’s Own Art Deco Day Out at Highwic on March 13.

Live music performed by the six-piece New Orleans Joymakers Jazz Band, along with a sparkling array of classic cars from the days of flappers and swingers, will make Highwic a hot spot for people wanting to let their hair down in true Jazz Era style.

“To use slang from that era, Auckland’s Own Art Deco Day Out is quite simply the bee’s knees; the cat’s miaow and the caterpillar’s kimono,” says the Manager of the Heritage New Zealand property in Newmarket, Cheryl Laurie.

“People who love all things Deco should come along to Highwic and enjoy the afternoon. Just pack a picnic and enjoy the sound of music from the Gatsby-era.”

A pop-up Café will operate on-site selling refreshments to punters looking for a pick-me-up, including delicious tea and cakes. And for those wanting to thumb their noses at Prohibition, G&Ts (that won’t cause blindness) will also be on sale for the day courtesy of the Glory Days Hendrick’s Gin Garden.

And for those keen to put on their 1930s glad rags, the Glory Days Best Dressed Contest will provide an irresistible incentive to dress in period costume with prizes of a bespoke handcrafted clutch from Estelle of Brighton, and a Hills Hat Deluxe Boater at stake.

Stalls selling couture, men’s and women’s-wear, vintage clothing, millinery and hats will also be at the Art Deco Day Out reflecting the distinctive design of the era.

“This was the era that produced some of the most stylish clothing, music, furniture and design the world has ever seen,” Says Rose Jackson of Glory Days magazine, the co-organisers of the event.

The wonderful world of Art Deco provides the ultimate in feel-good nostalgia according to Cheryl.

“March 13 is a great opportunity to relive this amazing era when fashion was hot, jazz was a blast and everyone swung. The $5 admission fee is also great value, enabling people to look around Highwic and also go into the draw for the Glory Days Hamper draw which includes prizes worth over $400,” she says.
