Highwic holiday programme guaranteed to entertain
Entertainment with a difference will feature at Highwic these upcoming school holidays.
The historic mansion in Newmarket, now cared for by Heritage New Zealand, will host four shows featuring Auckland puppeteer, John Rew.
The Pukekohe-based puppeteer has brought fun and laughter to children and kids at heart for generations, and is looking forward to bringing his traditional marionette string puppets to Highwic to present his all-original puppet circus.
“My traditional marionette string puppets come to life as the circus comes to you,” says John.
“Clowns, acrobats and animals perform to music, providing entertainment for all the family. The children love it and after the show they get to have a turn with a simple puppet themselves.”
John’s interest in puppets began when he was given a simple cowboy puppet as a small boy. Inspired by a book that depicted a miniature circus starring a cast of puppets, he set out to make his own. Over the years he has developed a fully-fledged circus show starring marionettes that perform tricks and other circus antics.
“Since I first started making the circus hundreds of children have played with and enjoyed my puppets with many going on to make simple marionettes,” he says.
Besides John Rew’s puppet shows, there will also be opportunities for children to have a go at cooking with a difference as Highwic fires up its coal range for four sessions of kitchen-based fun. With a bit of guidance from some of Highwic’s volunteers, children will be able to bake some delicious goodies on the coal range just like their great grandparents did a hundred years ago.
Spaces are limited for both attractions so bookings are essential (see below).
