Heritage New Zealand on Cathedral announcement
23/12/2015
Heritage New Zealand is pleased progress has been made on the future of Christ Church Cathedral with today’s announcement by the Government and Church Property Trustees and looks forward to being involved in discussions on its reinstatement.
Prior to today’s announcement Heritage New Zealand had supported the maximum safe retention of the building’s heritage as a basis for rebuilding the Cathedral in a recognisable form.
“We are pleased the discussion process recognised the wide range of public values associated with the building, and also the need to make progress to facilitate the recovery of Christchurch,” says Chief Executive Bruce Chapman.
“The Cathedral is an iconic landmark regionally, nationally and internationally – reflected in its Category 1 listing with Heritage New Zealand.”
