FINAL MOVE FOR SHANDS

Shands Emporium is on the move again at 7am on Tuesday 6 December. But this time to its permanent home beside the former Trinity Congregational Church, 1875, in Manchester Street.  It has been strengthened and will be lifted by crane and turned round so that it faces Manchester Street.

Built by John Shand, colonial farmer and businessman, in 1860, it is Christchurch’s oldest wooden commercial building in the CBD. Its first tenants were solicitors but in more recent times it was treasured by many people for fond memories of its boutique shops of second hand books and vintage clothing and bric a brac. Proposals for future tenants are being sought.

Sold by Antony Gough to Christchurch Heritage Limited for $1, Shands will be lovingly restored back to its original condition complete with shingled roof. Shands will sit comfortably beside the Trinity Church – both Category 1 Heritage New Zealand listed and CCC listed – with a new Annex to be built behind. The Annex will incorporate showers, toilets, kitchen space and offices so that the heritage fabric of the two buildings will not be compromised with the addition of contemporary facilities.

Anna Crighton, Chair of Christchurch Heritage Limited, said ‘This is a significant step forward toward the completion of Shands, ready for the public to enjoy this unique little building once again’.

The whole complex of Shands, Trinity Church (including the replication of the tower) plus the Annex is planned to be completed by September 2017.
