MEDIA RELEASE

Festival features family-friendly fun at Highwic

Highwic – the historic Newmarket mansion cared for by Heritage New Zealand – is building on its successful series of children’s programmes with another offering of family-friendly fun these school holidays.

The holiday programme attractions are also official Auckland Heritage Festival events.

Kids can enjoy a range of different fun activities that celebrate Highwic’s 154 years of history. First up is Upstairs and Downstairs for Kids (September 28 and October 5).

“Children will be able to experience working life in a Victorian house using authentic laundry equipment as we do the family washing and fetch the fuel for the coal range,” says Highwic’s Manager, Cheryl Laurie.

“We’ll also be rolling up our sleeves to make butter and scones which we’ll bake in Highwic’s coal range. And while the scones are baking we’ll visit ‘upstairs’ and see how the other half lived.”

The reward for completing all the chores – which are actually a lot of fun – will be warm scones, freshly made butter and a good chance of some delicious home-made jam as well.

Adults who might also be looking for a bit of a diversion during the holidays can pop along to Your Bread and Butter (September 29 and October 6) and have a go at making butter from scratch and cooking on the coal range.

“This is a rare opportunity for grown-ups to have a go at getting hands-on in a Victorian kitchen and experience something of how cooking and food preparation was done over 100 years ago,” says Cheryl.

And for younger people interested in expressing their artistic side, Victorian Crafts (September 28 & 29; and October 5 & 6) will provide a great opportunity for children to enjoy similar arts and crafts activities that children would have enjoyed doing at Highwic 150 years ago – including decorating a ‘keepsake box’ in the decoupage style.
