Bastille-themed concert at Alberton

The sounds of French music will fill the air at Alberton – the property cared for by Heritage New Zealand in Mt Albert – on July 19.

A concert entitled Du Paix et d’Esperance [Of Peace and Hope] will feature music by Faure, Debussy, Offenbach and other composers to celebrate Bastille Day.

“We’re delighted to be able to welcome back Cathie Harrop and her team of musicians for this special occasion,” says the Manager of Alberton, Rendell McIntosh.

“Although the concert will take place several days after Bastille Day (July 14) it promises to be a musical festival of all things French.”

The concert will feature some of Auckland’s leading musicians, including sopranos Amanda Kirk and Nikki Silk; Harpist Louise Andrews; Cellists Jennie Khan and Jason Moss; and Pianist William Green. Keeping with the French theme, the programme will be presented in French and English by Cathie Harrop and Jennie Khan.

As well as classical music, the programme will include music made famous by French chanteuse Edith Piaf, along with traditional folksongs.

Concert-goers will be welcomed with an aperitif on arrival and invited to stay for wine and cheese, and to mingle with the performers after the concert.

“The French language and culture has always been a part of life at Alberton. The daughters of Allan Kerr Taylor – the original owner of Alberton – all learned French and music as part of their education, so there’s a nice sense of continuity that the concert celebrating Bastille Day will be held here,” says Rendell.

“Cathie’s concerts are always very popular and we expect this one to be the same – so all those Francophiles wanting to celebrate France’s special day in a wonderfully elegant heritage setting should book early.”

Du Paix et d’Esperance – A Collection of French Music for Bastille Day takes place at Alberton on Sunday July 19 at 5pm. Tickets $35; Aperitif served from 4.30pm. Book online – www.cathieharrop.co.nz or phone 09-479-2361.
