Medial Release:

JAMES BLAKE COMING TO OAMARUSCOTT100

James Blake, son of the late Sir Peter Blake and Pippa Lady Blake, is coming to Oamaru Scott100 as a guest speaker at the Scott Commemoration Dinner, Saturday February 9, at the Loan and Merc Restaurant on Oamaru Harbour.

James currently works as a freelance cameraman filming for a Natural History production company that produces films for the BBC and Discovery Channel. In 2007 he spent two months in the Antarctic as part of a six man restoration team working on Shackeltons hut and in 2012 completed an unassisted row from Sydney to Auckland as part of a four man team. He has BSc Hons in Environmental Science from the University of West of England, UK and is working on his Masters thesis from Otago University looking into the decline of coral reefs.

Scott100 Co-Convenor Bruce Albiston said that the organisers are especially delighted to have James attend given his special associations and his personal experience of Antarctica. “We believe locals and visitors alike will want to hear James speak as well as our international visitors. James has shown in his involvements the same spirit which imbued the Scott era a century ago. He has a contemporary perspective that will add real value to the Oamaru commemoration. James will be visiting schools and sharing in other Scott100 activities. We are deeply grateful to the Sir Peter Blake Trust which together with Antarctica NZ has generously sponsored James’ visit. The Antarctic Heritage Trust, and the Otago Community Trust are also Scott100 sponsors.”

Professor Sir David Skegg, President of the Royal Society of New Zealand, and Mrs Philippa Foster Back, Chair of the United Kingdom Antarctic Heritage Trust, will also be present and contributing to the occasion. Other international guests include Zoe Young the granddaughter of Kathleen Scott and Lord Kennet. “There is a remarkable level of interest generated by the Oamaru programme,” Mr Albiston said “ And we are confident that those who join us will experience the historic significance of the Scott Polar epic that gripped the world a century ago.”

Bookings are now open for the Commemorative Dinner @ $100pp at the Oamaru Opera House or on line www.oamaruscott100.org.nz
