Make a bit of history at Alberton’s Garden Gala

Alberton’s last celebration of its 150th anniversary year will be marked in style a grand finale Garden Gala on Sunday March 30 (11am-3pm).

The day will provide a lot of fun, food and music for the entire family according to the New Zealand Historic Places Trust’s Rendell McIntosh, who is Alberton’s manager.

“For our final anniversary event, we’re keen to open Alberton up to the community so people can enjoy what is sure to be a really great day,” says Rendell.

“There’s probably no better way to celebrate the anniversary of this iconic Mt Albert heritage building than to give people an opportunity to come along and enjoy great live music and entertainment along with a wide range of craft and food stalls on-site.”

Stalls will include Criollo Chocolates and Desserts, Kai Moana’s Whitebait and Mussell Patties, Hakanoa Ginger Beer and a wide range of craft stalls spanning everything from flax weaving to fine art.

Other attractions will include Morris Dancers, Highland Dancers and Indian dancers – all representing Alberton’s strong family links to England, Scotland and India.

“There will even be some maypole dancing as well,” says Rendell.

Singer Grant Chilcott and John Fennell’s string quartet will also entertain with live music, while Old Macdonald’s Mobile Farm will provide fun for the kids.

“Besides being a lot of fun, this is a terrific opportunity for people to make a bit of history themselves by being part of Alberton’s last 150th anniversary ‘hurrah’,” he says.

Alberton’s Garden Gala will be an all-weather event – entry to the Gala is free; with half price entry of $5 to the House (children and NZHPT members free).  Ph 09-846-7367 or email alberton@historic.org.nz for more information.
