The Ramble has been postponed.
We invite you to join us
Historic Places Mid Canterbury
on a ramble to
Historic Hakatere Station Buildings
Sunday September 15, 2013
Join us for a great day out celebrating Hakatere and other icons of the Mount Somers area including Barrosa Woolshed, Limestone Cottage and Buxton Lime Quarry.
We are very lucky to have the expertise of local heritage campaigner David Howden to guide us on this day trip.
David has a wealth of knowledge on the Mount Somers area and is a great story teller. If you haven’t already visited the Hakatere Site then don’t delay it any longer. And if you have, come along and see all the hard work the Hakatere Heritage Committee and Department of Conservation have done recently to enhance it.
The Hakatere Stone Cottage is possibly Mid Canterbury’s oldest building. It was built in1862 from locally sourced materials. Behind sits the wooden shearer’s quarters dating from around 1880.
NZ Historic Places Trust recognise Hakatere Station buildings as a Category II Historic site.
Transport by private car.
Hakatere is 23km up the Ashburton Gorge Road above Mount Somers Township.
Bring your lunch, hot drinks and a folding chair. Sealed roads. Meet at Historic Places
Mid Canterbury rooms on Havelock Street (behind Museum) at 10am Sunday September 15,
returning around 4pm.
Or if coming from Christchurch you can meet us at the Mt Somers Domain,
Hoods Road, Mount Somers Township at 10.30am
No charge, however a paper note donation will be collected at Hakatere
for the on-going restoration of the Hakatere buildings and site.
