- widespread anger and shock at Warwick Isaacs’s decision to issue s38 for demolition of Majestic Theatre building
- many sound arguments promoted in the media for retention and adaptive re-use
- these highlighted by recent Press Perspective from Dr Ian Lochhead
- two requests by Save The Majestic group to meet Roger Sutton and Warwick Isaacs ignored
- strong opinion in arts and heritage as well as business community that retention important
- Manchester / Lichfield Sts: key corner building with rich history - cinema, performing arts, Christian worship
- Group 2 CCC heritage building, of “national or regional significance”
- one of few major remaining CCC listed heritage buildings in this part of city between urban living zone and Innovation Precinct
- huge potential for performance, community, IT, cultural enrichment
- Save the Majestic spokespeople seeking urgent meeting with Mayor Dalziel
- CCC Earthquake Recovery Committee of the Whole offered unanimous support in response to December 5, 2013 deputation of Save the Majestic group:
- Save the Majestic group calls for a halt to demolition plan development, consideration of Manchester St widening alternatives and investigation of repair and strengthening costs.
- Don’t demolish the Majestic till all possible alternatives are exhausted.
