Bruce Paine concert at Alberton
Two of New Zealand’s leading classical guitarists will perform a concert of live music as part of Alberton’s 150th anniversary on December 7 at 7pm.
Bruce Paine and Rex Button will present The 19th Century Guitar – A Tribute to Alberton as part of anniversary celebrations for the Mt Albert property, which is cared for by the NZ Historic Places Trust.
“Bruce and Rex will play 19th Century guitar solos and duets on a magnificent 1823 Panormo guitar and three reproduction period instruments that were built this year by Auckland luthier Rod Capper especially for the Alberton performance,” says the Manager of Alberton, Rendell McIntosh.
“The two guitar virtuosos will also be joined by young Auckland singer Imogen Abernethy in performances of a selection of songs from the Victorian period, including the 1863 work Angel’s Visits from Alberton’s music collection.”
Classical guitar music will be the main part of the programme, however, including original works by Fernando Sor, Julian Arcas, Francisco Tarrega, and transcriptions of piano works by Charles Bonnington, William Vincent Wallace, Frederic Chopin and Johann Strauss II.
A performance of one of Bruce’s popular compositions Seringapatam, inspired by Alberton’s architecture, will be a special feature of the anniversary concert.
“Bruce loves the intimate ambience and acoustics of Alberton – which is the perfect venue for concerts like this one,” says Rendell.
“For this reason seats are limited and so bookings are essential.”
The evening includes a complimentary drink for guests on arrival, and supper after the concert. Also on offer is a complimentary copy per guest of Bruce Paine’s first CD Recital for Guitar. Other titles including the Alberton DVD and CD will be on sale during the performance.
Tickets for the concert are $35 per person (or $30pp for members of the NZ Historic Places Trust and the Auckland Guitar Society), with children up to 13 years free if accompanied by two adults. Tickets are available via Eventfinder (Ph 0800 289 8490, or www.eventfinder.co.nz)
People will also be able to explore Alberton before the concert ($10 per adult; children free). For more information contact Alberton (ph 846-7367) or email alberton@historic.org.nz
